Mattatuck Trail - Buttermilk Falls - Plymouth CT

Buttermilk Falls, The Mattatuck Blue Trail, Terryville CT
Traveling mainly through The Mattatuck State Forest in Thomaston and Watertown, The Mattatuck Trail is one of Connecticut's Blue Blazed Trails. The section in Terryville and Plymouth includes Buttermilk Falls - a 60ft three tier waterfall. This section also passes two caves and a large pond. This trail is not excessively difficult. But, the stones near the falls can be wet and very slippery. The pine and hardwood forests that encase this trail are wide and deep, but there is a lengthy section that must be hiked on sidewalks along Allentown Rd. If you want to just see the falls, you can park on pull-off shoulders along Lane Hill Road. The falls is only a five minute walk from the road.

This was billed  to be a rainy day. I decided, that I would hike this morning regardless of weather. But, it turned out to be bright and sunny. There had been rain overnight and in the early morning, so the woods had that fresh, misty, and earthy feel. I had in mind, a nice secluded hike on soft pine needles and along streams and rivers. I got exactly what I was looking for this time.

I found a single parking spot made where the Mattatuck joins Lane Hill Road. As I stepped out of my car I could hear the falls. there was a pretty awesome bridge over a deep cut, and I was at the falls immediately. Buttermilk was a little more impressive than I expected. And, even though I tried to capture it on film and video, these tools rarely do a waterfall justice. You will be missing the thunderous sound and splash.

Further along on the trail, I strolled easily alongside the brook that feeds the falls. the trail let out awkwardly on someone's driveway, and so I followed the blue blazes down the driveway and along sidewalks down Allentown and Wolcott Roads. the trail re-entered the woodlands and became much rockier and muddier.

I came across two caves on the trail - and they also were more impressive than what passes for a cave around here. Both were overhangs. There was a decent side trail to a bald rock where you can survey the hills of Connecticut.

I turned back at 2.5 miles, I wasn't game for an all day affair. But it was a good morning. A sort of string of pleasant surprises.
